*THE SCIENCE OF SOUND* Sound is produced when something vibrates. The vibrating body causes the medium (water, air, etc.) around it to vibrate. Vibrations in air are called traveling longitudinal waves, which we can hear. Sound waves consist of areas of high and low pressure called compressions and rarefactions, respectively. Our project today was centered on how sound is generated and transferred. We started with simple ideas of sound transfer through vibrations of objects, such as paper and moved on to explain sound as we speak. This was followed closely by creation of a simple cup phone to explain vibrations and the limitations of signals. Then we concluded with a simple demonstration of a homemade speaker in which students would understand how the vibrations are made in today’s society. Finally, we discussed possible engineering career paths that focus specifically on sound and speakers. #soundvibrations #stemeducation #stemvolunteers
